How To Find High Paying
Keywords For Your Web Pages
Finding high paying keywords is really important for the success of your website. The best keywords aren’t always easy to find. Here’s how to go about finding the top paying keywords…
Before we continue, if you don’t know why finding high paying keywords are important, read my article on search engine keywords.
To find a keyword (one or more words) to use on your web page, you could ask yourself, “What would I type into the search box if I were looking for the information I’m about to present?” While it would be good think in that way, it would only account for your way of thinking.
That’s why it is a better idea to use keywords services and tools that show you actual keywords that others have used at search engines.
The Basics of Keyword Research
For each keyword that you might consider using on your website, you want to know at least two things:
- Search Popularity: Is this a popular keyword that many people use for searches? It is pointless using a keyword if nobody is searching for it, right? So you want keywords that have strong search volume.
- Competition: How many other websites are using the keyword? If too many other websites are using the keyword, it becomes tough to rank highly for that keyword in the search engines. You want to use keywords that don’t have a lot of competition.
Once you have these numbers for your keywords, you can do some calculations on them to help you decide which are the best keywords. One way to do that is to divide the popularity number by the competition number to get a “value index”. You can then compare all your keywords’ value indexes to identify your potential high paying keywords.
You might be wondering where you get these numbers. The keyword research services provide numbers that help you identify the top paying keywords.
Keyword Research Services
Wordtracker
Wordtracker is a keyword research service. In fact, it is one of the most popular keyword services on the internet!
Wordtracker has two very popular keyword tools. Keyword Universe is great for general brainstorming and building a list of keywords for your website topic. Keyword Researcher helps you further research each keyword on your list. You can read more about the details on these two tools on their website.
Wordtracker is a paid service, but it is well worth the price. You can get a free trial if you want to test it before buying the service.
Wordtracker also offers a free keyword tool that you could use to get some keyword ideas. It doesn’t give near as many keywords or as much data about each keyword as the paid service does, but it can nevertheless be a very handy starting point.
One other thing I like about Wordtracker is that they want you to succeed. They have Wordtracker Academy with all kinds of useful articles, including a free ebook on doing keyword research.
Give Wordtracker some serious thought. I highly recommend them.
Google Keywords Suggestion Tool
The Google Keywords Suggestion Tool, while aimed at helping Adwords advertisers find keywords for their ads, is a very handy tool for finding high paying keywords.
The tool provides a variety of data criteria for each keyword, like advertiser competition, search volume, estimated cost-per-click (for Adwords ads), etc. Not all of the criteria are shown by default, but you have the option of turning criteria on or off.
The Google keywords tool is free. Take a look at it, especially if you’re also planning to display Google ads on your website.
Google Traffic Estimator
Another handy keywords tool is the Google Traffic Estimator. It is useful for determining the value that a keyword might have for Google advertisers, and can therefore help you find high payng keywords.
The traffic estimator is very simple to use. After using Wordtracker or the Google Keywords Suggestion Tool to make a list of keywords, enter your list into the traffic estimator. It then tells you, for each keyword, what it’s estimated cost-per-click (CPC) is, how many clicks it should get per day, and it’s estimated cost per day.
Although these numbers are presented from the advertiser’s point of view, e.g. cost per day, you could interpret them from your own point of view. Cost per day to the advertiser can be seen as potential income per day to you.
The right way to evaluate these numbers is merely to compare one keyword with another to get a feel for which are the best keywords to use. If keyword A has a daily income potential of $5, it doesn’t really matter if keyword B is $6 or $7. Keyword B is better because it has a higher income potential.
Armed with these keywords analyzers and tools, you can now compile a list of high paying keywords to use on your website. Although you might be tempted to blow it off, let me assure you that finding the best keywords is critical to your website’s success!
